Things went disastrously wrong. It was a real fiasco. We tried to {compensate|mitigate the situation, but it was like trying to stop a flood with a teaspoon. We're still picking up the pieces and feeling the blow of this disaster.

This problem has spiraled out of control. It's a total catastrophe. We've tried just about everything to fix it, but nothing seems to function. At this point, it feels like we're hopelessly stuck. Frankly, I don't know what else to do. This is a train wreck of epic proportions.

Sometimes you find yourself face-to-face with situations so horrifically bad that you can't help but laugh. It's like your brain tries to process the sheer level of destruction and just gives up, opting for amusement as a coping defense.
But then, you realize that it's not really funny. It's just plain bad. And the laughter you experienced morphs into a wistful, melancholic sound.
Ultimately, you are left with a sense of bewilderment. You start ruminating about the meaning of it all. Was this some kind of twisted art experiment?
Or were we just living in a simulation gone wrong?

The volcanic eruption struck suddenly, destroying entire cities in its path. Buildings collapsed like house of cards, and the screams that erupted was deafening. Dreadful Day Ever
It all started with the case of terrible hair. I couldn't make it to look presentable. As I was dashing out the door, I stumbled and gracefully all over the carpet. To make matters worse, I was extremely behind schedule for school.

It all started out badly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then things went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in more info a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to run away and hide.
